Sine Qua Non Arles,

On Friday, January 30th, our Arles ambassadors invite you to meet at 6:15 PM at the tourist office kiosk for a sports session combining running and strength training in the city streets.

Goal: to combat sexist violence

The idea is simple: to encourage women to reclaim public space and assert their right to exercise whenever they want, wherever they want, and in whatever outfit they want.

To read before any participation:

By participating in the Sine Qua Non Squad, I confirm that I am fit to run and have no medical contraindications, I accept the risks associated with the activity. I agree not to hold the organizers responsible for any incident, even in case of negligence.

I also agree to be photographed and filmed and to the distribution of images; if I refuse, I agree to notify the ambassadors in advance of the session.

Why the Sine Qua Non Squad?

This initiative was created following numerous testimonies from female runners sharing both their fear of running alone early in the morning or late at night, and their annoyance at being subjected to sexist remarks, especially when they run in shorts or sports bras.

A 2015 study by Runner's World revealed that 43% of women report being victims of harassment during their running sessions, and 27% of women have simply stopped running for this reason.

How does it work?

Each month, women and men are invited to join the Sine Qua Non Squad for sports sessions combining 5 to 6 km of running and muscle-strengthening exercises supervised by our ambassadors. These sessions have the particularity of taking place in places perceived as "unsafe" by women and at the end of the day. Another particularity: girls are invited to run as they wish, especially in leggings, shorts, and sports bras, if they feel more comfortable that way.
