Biodiversity is collapsing... Do we know enough to act? SEMECOL Seminar Tuesday, January 13th, from 5:30 PM to 7:30 PM San Subra Room

Speakers: Carole Voisin (Lecturer in Education and Training Sciences, EFTS, UT2J), Hervé Philippe and Staffan Jacob (Ecology researchers, CNRS, SETE, Moulis)
Hosted by Jean-Louis Hemptinne (Atécopol) and Héloïse Leloup (MSHS-T)

Scientific knowledge about climate change and biodiversity has been growing exponentially for 50 years. This research effort is notably justified by the supposed positive effect of the quantity of knowledge for climate and biodiversity protection and individual and collective pro-environmental commitments. But can an accumulation of rational knowledge initiate the necessary changes in our societies? Between an assessment of engagement among ecologists and climatologists, the history of relations between science and power, and case studies in our mountains, we propose for debate the following question: Is knowing more always beneficial for better protection?
The Humanities and Social Sciences, including Education and Training Sciences, also question this relationship between knowledge and engagement. For this cross-disciplinary perspective, we propose to focus particularly on some discussion points: the types of knowledge targeted in training on these themes, the specific place of working with representations and pedagogical approaches, and finally, what philosophical discussion exists on the educational challenges related to the aims of engagement and responsibilities introduced in school curricula: citizen engagement and school engagement, the same struggle?

Session co-organized as part of the lecture series "Cross-disciplinary perspectives on living beings in society" of the MSHS-Sud in Montpellier.
